Ways to Collaborate

The CSAM Deterrence Centre is dedicated to combating the proliferation of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) online. We believe that collaboration with technology companies is crucial to achieving our mission of creating a safer digital environment for children. The Centre will tailor a collaboration strategy that is practical and applicable to the needs of each partner we work with.

Here are several ways in which companies can partner with us:

Design and Implement Warning Messages

The Centre can support your organisation in designing and implementing effective warning messages on your platforms. These messages are tailored to deter individuals from accessing or distributing CSAM by highlighting the legal and ethical consequences. By integrating these messages, companies can demonstrate the effectiveness of their disrupt and deter efforts and fulfil their duty of care, and contribute to a safer online environment. These warning messages could be triggered in a range of ways:

  • A user enters a search term that relates to CSAM.
  • A user attempts to access a blocked URL via services such as the Interpol IWOL list or the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) URL List.
  • A user has completed a concerning financial transaction.
  • A user is detected as undertaking behaviours consistent with grooming.
  • An image is detected as matching a known CSAM image as catalogued by NCMEC, IWF or similar organisations.
  • Other behaviours that are specific to the individual technology partner

Additionally, there has been demonstrated value in messaging targeted at victims and bystanders, whose triggers may be quite different from those mentioned above, or could take the form of an awareness campaign. The Centre can also collaborate on the design of messaging within these contexts.

Interventions of this nature can involve ongoing evaluation and refinement of prevention strategies. Tech companies can provide valuable data and feedback to help assess the effectiveness of warning messages and other interventions. This iterative process ensures that our approaches remain relevant and effective in deterring harmful behaviours.

Education and Outreach

The Centre offers training and resources to help companies and institutions understand the issue of CSAM and the importance of online safety. By fostering a culture of vigilance and responsibility, we empower companies to take proactive steps in protecting their users. Members of the Centre team have previously run professional development sessions with industry partners, government agencies, and online regulators.
